Xiaomi Mi TV Stick: Xiaomi presents the competitor to the Amazon Fire TV Stick . Although the truth is that we are somewhat disappointed because it does not have 4K, and it only has 1 GB of RAM. However, in terms of price and performance, it is on par with the Amazon model. Also, what stands out about the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick compared to its competitor is that it works with Android TV 9 and is really easy to use. We have already tried it and we will tell you if it is really worth it.
The function of the Stick or a TV Box is to transform a “normal” television into a Smart TV. In general, this is usually cheaper than buying a device that combines everything directly. Xiaomi is no longer a beginner in this. After the Xiaomi Mi Box 4K, its successor the Xiaomi Mi TV Box S came out. What was missing until now was a TV Stick that was finally presented on July 15 of this year. The first reaction was “Bah”: Why should I change the Fire TV Stick for the Mi Stick TV? The technical differences don’t seem really interesting to me. But I decided to give it a try, to see if there was any improvement in practice.
The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick comes in an orange box, just like the Mi Box S. The design of the box is quite similar to that of Amazon. I imagine that this is just a coincidence, because as I have already mentioned, it is not the first time that Xiaomi uses this color for its cases.
The Stick itself measures 9.2cm long , 3cm wide and 1.5cm tall , making it slightly smaller and a few grams lighter than the competition deb. Like Amazon, they opted for an unspectacular mix of matte and gloss black. The Mi logo is highlighted with glitter on the matte half.
On the side is the micro USB port , which can also be connected to the USB input of the television using the cable. In this way we do not have to charge it in a socket with the adapter that is included, Although the manufacturer recommends charging it with the socket, I used it through the USB outlet without any problem. This port is positioned well back so as not to hinder other HDMI inputs. Although both the Mi TV Stick and the Fire TV Stick are so wide that they unfortunately block the second input on some TV models. The HDMI connector is only 6mm long (Fire TV: 8 mm). It may be that in some cases we cannot connect the stick correctly without an adapter, although this is not included, as is the case with the Fire TV Stick. By the way, the same applies to the two AAA batteries in the remote.
As I have already mentioned, the specifications of the Xiaomi Mi TV Stick are not really innovative. The Bluetooth standard is 4.2, it is a bit more contemporary than the competition, but this technology came out in 2014, and it was already used in the Mi Box S. It would have been better if they had installed Bluetooth 5.
The GPU has also adopted Mali 450 and the ARM Quad Core Cortex A53 CPU of the Mi Box S. A 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of flash memory may be somewhat scarce in some cases. Since some apps download directly during setup (not required, but without Netflix etc. doesn’t make much sense either I think). Also when I installed the stick there was a 650 MB software update, so I had 5.1 GB free before even downloading another app from the Play Store. The Xiaomi Mi TV Stick works with all major bands with WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 2.4 and 5 GHz.
