What To Know To Perform For A Migration To The Cloud

Migration To The Cloud : When we refer to the data of a certain company, many people think of a large server located in a room of the company. Parallel to the evolution of new technologies, with the Internet as the main axis, more and more companies are choosing to migrate to the cloud.

Cloud Computing , or Cloud Computing, is the term used to define the processing and storage of data on the Internet. In this way, any identified user can access the information at any time and place, in a simple way.

How To Migrate A Server To The Cloud?

To make the most of the advantages offered by the cloud in relation to servers, it is important to know the process. A good option is to do it with Microsoft Azure, a cloud service offered by the American company.

Steps

The first thing is to check that the “Remote Desktop” option is enabled. Also, you need to allow RDP connections in Windows Firewall. The format is VHD, the one used by Azure for all its virtual machines.

The next step is to create a storage account in Azure, where you have to upload the Virtual Hard Disk created in the previous step.

Once the disk is uploaded, you have to access the virtual machines section and select the option that allows you to create a new disk from the existing VHD.

To do this, you simply have to select the option from the gallery and select the disk that has just been added.

What To Keep In Mind When Migrating To The Cloud?

There are a number of aspects that are important to know when migrating to the cloud in the corporate environment.

Needs

The first and most important thing is to assess the needs, both present and future. Although the Cloud Computing service is scalable and you can hire more storage capacity or bandwidth in the future, it is convenient to be clear about what your needs are from the start.

Evaluate in detail what is the weight and format of all files and databases.

Service model

Of course, you have to be very clear about the different service models that exist in order to choose the most appropriate one.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): it is the most basic Cloud Computing service. As its name suggests, it provides what is known as computing infrastructure, which includes virtual machines and other resources.

Platform as a Service (PasS): in this case, the Cloud Computing provider offers a development environment for mobile application developers. Thus, developers can have a series of tools, in addition to various channels for distribution.

Software as a Service (SaaS): in this model, users have access to the software, including the resources and infrastructure necessary for the correct delivery of the service.

Cloud operating systems

It is essential to know the  cloud operating systems  and choose the one that best suits the specific characteristics of each project. Ubuntu is one of the most popular, and allows you to create a cloud in ownCloud. In it, users have a large selection of options and functionalities available.

Migration plan

Of course, it is essential to plan the migration. There are three possible scenarios.

Shut down and wake up: this model is applicable to all those applications that are migrated based on the private IaaS model. The service is transferred to virtual machines provided by the Cloud Computing provider.

Implement and migrate: in this case, the application is made on the newly implemented applications in the company, generally in a SaaS model.

Shut down and dismantle: applies to those applications that have become obsolete and/or that no longer add any value to the company’s activity.

Advantages Of Moving To The Cloud

It is interesting to know what the main advantages of migrating to the cloud are for a certain company.

Operating costs: in the midst of the information age, the fact that a company stores all the data on its own physical server requires a very high investment in equipment and software. However, cloud services require significantly less investment.

Scalability: the cloud service adapts precisely to the specific needs of users and companies. If at a certain moment a company needs more storage or a higher disk speed, for example, it only has to contract a superior plan. As simple as that.

Updates: by migrating to the cloud a company can focus 100% on its business since all secondary tasks, such as updates, are carried out automatically.

Availability: Currently, many employees have decided to move their workplace away from the office. Well, thanks to Cloud Computing they can access the information stored in the cloud at any time and place.

Security: Of course, security is more than guaranteed. The person who contracts the service has absolute control over who accesses their space in the cloud.
