Although factors such as the use of social networks and parenting style may seem disconnected, a recent study approached by experts from the University of Central Florida and Indiana University Bloomington indicates that there is more of a relationship between the two than we thought.
Parenting Style, Practices, and Perspectives on Sharing Young Children’s Photos on Social Media, the initiative analyzes 493 cases of regular users with sons and daughters aged 10 and under living in the United States. Several aspects are taken into account in the analysis. Among them, their demographic data, their activity in the virtual environment, the inclusion of minors in it and their parenting styles.

Despite the risks of this practice called sharenting, there are previous academic works that examined the psychosocial motivations of adults to carry it out. In fact, there are a number of documented benefits. These range from the externalization of their affection to the demonstration of the achievements and skills of their sons and daughters to their contacts.
These behaviors may be helpful to parents. For example, to see their stress levels reduced and as a means to advocate for the normalization of male intervention in parenting. They even serve to obtain an economic return that is later destined to charitable works.
One of the most interesting areas of research from the aforementioned American universities is positively associated, according to the vision of parents most prone to these actions, the frequency with which they share photos with the perceived probability that strangers will see them. Nor was there an excessive concern among the most active users about the possibility that others could use and manipulate them for various purposes.
Similarly, there were no significant concerns among these participants about the possibility that their children might feel embarrassed, at some point in the future, when viewing such content. But the most relevant finding of the initiative has to do with the relationship between social media activity and parenting style. According to the conclusions of the study, those who share more information of this nature, tend to be more open, permissive and confident in the education of minors.
